Glenda Mefford
Executive Director
Senior Suites, LLC: Secretary/Treasurer
Glenda (Rich) Mefford was born and raised in Newcastle, Wyoming. Her father was an oil field business man, part owner and operator of Rich Brothers, Inc. She grew up in a family of nine children, amazingly all of whom still make their homes in Wyoming.
She started working when she was in 8th grade, first at the Howdy Drive In and then at J.C. Penney's thru her high school years. She worked for Dixon Brothers Inc. as bookkeeper until deciding to begin her family.
She married Joe Mefford, Under-Sheriff in Newcastle, in 1973, and had two sons, Joey and Brian. In 1989, Joe had a heart attack while at work and passed away, leaving her to raise both sons alone. Glenda believes in the saying, “It takes a whole village to raise a child” and credits her God, family, church and her community with assistance in raising the boys.
Glenda went to work at the Michaels Senior Center in October 1992, as the bookkeeper, then moved up to become Director in May, of 1994. She has watched the senior center grow from only three employees in a dime-store building with a budget of $43,000, then move on to the former Gertrude Burns Elementary School building -- given to the seniors of Weston County by the City of Newcastle. She currently has sixteen employees on staff with the annual budget for 2008-2009, well over $500,000.
Glenda writes all the grants for the senior center and requests financial assistance from the City of Newcastle, Weston County Commissioners and the City of Upton. She also keeps fund raisers lined up, making sure to keep the operational money-flow going. The senior center has seen the doors swing wide open these past several years with the sky as the limit providing new, beneficial services for the seniors.
With the extra space in the new location, and added monies provided through state legislation as well as the newly appointed Wyoming Senior Services Board, the senior center seems better enabled to meet the needs of the senior community. Glenda credits a supportive board of directors, a faithful staff and wonderful, dedicated volunteers for the continuing success of Weston County Senior Services.
Glenda's hero would have to be her mother, who passed away in September of 2003. After Glenda's husband passed away her mother told her to 'keep your eyes on the Lord and He will direct your path'. Many times when Glenda was ready to throw in the towel, her mother would remind her to 'remember who your boss is' and Glenda would keep going. Glenda loves her job with the seniors of Weston County and looks forward to helping make the rest of their lives as active and enjoyable as is humanly possible.
As a note: Glenda's two sons, Joey and Brian still live in Newcastle, and work for Thunder Basin Coal Mine. Brian married Kandice Dunn of Newcastle and they have blessed Glenda with two amazing grandsons, Keyan and Gage.
